If the change is one-sided, or new

Do not book a cosmetic consultation first. A brow that has dropped on one side only, a forehead that has stopped moving or a brow that cannot be lifted on one side, a new lump or swelling over the brow, or a spot on the forehead that bleeds, crusts or will not heal need medical assessment. If a drooping lid is accompanied by double vision, eye pain or any change in vision, that assessment is urgent rather than routine, and emergency care is the right route.

Arranging an ordinary assessment

Where the lines have been present for years and are the same on both sides, appointments are made through the hospital outpatient line or through the appointment service described on the appointments page. Say that you are asking about the forehead so that the right clinic time is booked. If you are travelling from outside Chongqing, say so when you book, because the assessment can sometimes be arranged alongside any other tests in fewer visits.

What to bring

Bring a list of your current medicines and allergies, the names of any conditions you are being treated for, and any previous treatment records for the upper face, including injectable treatments and when they were last given, because the timing changes how the forehead is assessed. Bring your glasses or contact lens prescription if you have one, and mention any eye strain, because a muscle that is being used to see is being used more than it needs to be. Old photographs of your face are more useful than most people expect, because they show whether the lines are new or have always been there.

What happens at the consultation

Expect an examination rather than a presentation. The forehead is looked at at rest and then in movement, the brow position is recorded with the frontalis relaxed, the upper lid and the eye surface are examined, and the skin is assessed for thickness, dryness and sun damage. The history covers vision, screen work, sleep position, previous treatments and family pattern. You should leave knowing how much of your line is movement and how much is skin, where your brow sits, whether anything should be done, and what each option can and cannot change.
